ST MARK DAY IN VENICE

 ST MARK DAY IN VENICE

On April 25, Venice celebrates the city's patron saint, St Mark.

The ancient legend tells that the two merchants, Rustico da Torcello and Buono da Malamocco, stole the relics of St. Mark in Alexandria and then transported that to Venice in 828.

The relic of the saint was welcomed with great joy in Venice. The Venetian history tells that the evangelist Mark evangelized the Venetian people, getting its patron. San Marco became the emblem of the city taking the form of a winged lion wielding a sword and holds in paws an open book that reads: Peace to you or Mark my evangelist.

On 25 April, the date of the death of St. Mark's, still today Venice celebrates the commemoration with a procession in the Basilica of St Mark, which brings together the religious and civil authorities of the city.

On April 25, there is also a hugely widespread tradition in Venice: the Feast of the “Bocolo”, which is a tradition to give a rosebud to the loved woman.
